Jimmy Smith was a very good wide receiver for the Jaguars, but battled demons his entire career. Like a lot of NFL players without the structure of the team, they just fall apart when they retire.
That has been the case with Smith.
First Coast News has learned that former Jaguars wide receiver Jimmy Smith is an inmate in a Mississippi jail.
Smith entered jail in late March and is serving time a 2-year sentence for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and a 4-year sentence for cocaine possession. His tentative release date is November 8, 2018.
Here is some information on Jimmy Smith’s prior run-ins with the law and substance abuse.
In 2001, Smith was found to have benzoylecgonine, a by-product of cocaine, in his system after being pulled over on suspicion of drunk driving. He denied using cocaine and was not charged with any crime since he was not found to be impaired while driving. The incident did place Smith into the NFL’s substance-abuse program and in 2003, he was handed a four-game suspension for an undisclosed additional violation.
In April 2009 Smith was arrested for multiple drug charges.
Just a sad story, but cautionary tale for young players.
