It appears soccer player Robbie Rogers, will become the first openly gay athlete to play for a major U.S men’s professional sports team after agreeing to play for the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Earlier this year the 26-year-old decided to retire from the game after announcing he was gay on his blog, but it appears he has had a change of heart. According to the Guardian, Rogers will hold a press conference on Saturday to announce his decision, after the Galaxy and the team that held his rights since he last played in England, the Chicago Fire, came to an agreement.

Rogers, had been training in southern California with the Galaxy for the past few weeks where his family is located. Rogers, recently spoke to USA Today about his return, saying that he decided to return to the game after talking to LGBT youth forum in Portland last month.

“These kids are standing up for themselves and changing the world, and I’m 25, I have a platform and a voice to be a role model. How much of a coward was I to not step up to the plate?”

Slowly but surely, the right steps are being taken to make the possibility of an overall more progressive mindset in professional sports as far as an athlete’s sexuality, a reality.
