Golden Boy promotions and Miguel Cotto have booked the venue for his next NYC fight and for the first time it wont be at MSG. Prior to his last loss, against Austin Trout, Cotto had been undefeated at Madison Square Garden. His 8 fights in MSG since 2005 is the most by any boxer. That makes the announcement of a fight in the Barclays even more ground breaking.
It’s not ground breaking because of Cotto, lets face it he’s a declining boxer with a diminishing fans base. The underlining message is that the Barclays is becoming the new NYC hotspot for everything sports and music.
According to Observer.com the Barclays reported $46,866,337.14 in sales from tickets, suites and sponsor installments between April 1st, 2012 and September 30th, 2012.
They show no signs of slowing down this summer at the Barclays Arena.
The Barclays Summer Schedules feature these sporting events:
- Malignaggi vs Broner – June 22, 2013
- 2013 NBA Draft – June 27, 2013
- Hopkins vs Murat – July 13, 2013
- WWE Monday Night Raw – July 15, 2013
The new arena in Brooklyn is doing quiet well for itself and Madison Square Garden will always be the most historic venue in New York City, but the future points toward Brooklyn.
