The Minnesota Wild celebrated their first home playoff victory in over five years Sunday night, but it wasn’t easy. Wild rookie Jason Zucker took his opportunity in over time to put the heavily favored Chicago Blackhawks away.
Zucker trailed the puck, which was being moved behind the net, and crept to the front of the net virtually unseen. He knew that he’d have only a split second to find his shot and that the angle would be nearly impossible; that didn’t stop this unflappable rookie though.
Here is what Zucker had to say about his game winning goal:
“I don’t know if I even saw the net. I probably didn’t even look at the net.” He went on to say, “I just tried shooting it, and it happened to go in for me.”
Some may call that luck but if they’ve seen Zucker play they’d know that his work effort and toughness creates his good fortune. This is only the beginning for this young Wild team. They probably won’t upset the experienced Blackhawks in this series but the future is very bright for hockey in Minnesota.
