Flopping in the NBA is almost pretty commonplace at this point. It happens multiple times a game, and despite the league’s effort to implement fines to get rid of flopping we still see it happen nearly every game. Just ask Chris Bosh.
Interesting though, we now have a star player coming out and saying that flopping is apart of the game. Dirk Nowitzki of the Dallas Mavericks elaborated on his stance via Bleacher Report.
We’re never going to get rid of it…But you got to limit it. It’s part of sports. It’s part of winning. Some people are smart and do a little extra thing to kind of sell the call. To me, that’s part of sports.
You don’t want the obvious ones, the really, really bad ones. I think we’d love to get rid of those. But if somebody really does get shoved or hit a little bit, just to sell it a little for the referees so it does get the call, I don’t have a problem with that. I think that’s part of the game.
I think that regardless of whether or not you want to agree with Dirk, he is absolutely right.
Flopping is apart of the culture in the league now. If you’ve spent anytime watching these NBA playoffs you know that to be true. Perhaps the league will be able to cut down on the larger more ridiculous ones, but I think for the most part flopping is here to stay.
