Derek Rabelo was born blind. Though this would have disheartened many people, Derek had a different perspective on the ordeal. He wouldn’t allow the disability to stop him from pursuing his dreams. His father was a surfer, so naturally Derek wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps.

As reported by Surfer Today, Rabelo now has a documentary called “Beyond Sight” that follows his journey of learning the waves and learning to surf until he was able to accomplish the ultimate feat of surfing Pipeline, while meeting surfing greats like Rob Machado, Laird Hamilton, Tom Curren, Kelly Slater and Derek Ho to name a few.

Kelly Slater explains how Rabelo’s accomplishment surpasses expectations by saying:

“Pipeline is basically the ultimate wave in a lot of ways — just a short, intense, dangerous wave that’s close to the beach. Many surfers with sight do not venture out even after they see that others can do it”.

Derek’s story is that gentle reminder that there should be no excuses about setting a goal and achieving it.
