The NFL formally announced the suspension of Oakland Raiders WR Andre Holmes for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. The four game suspension will be carried out at the beginning of the 2013 season according to CBS Sports.
Holmes is 25 years old and spent the first two seasons of his NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys. He was picked up by the Raiders off the waivers after being released by the Cowboys earlier this year. Holmes wasn’t the most prolific receiver, as he caught two passes for 11 yards last season. However, the use of PEDs that is increasingly being exposed in the NFL, and it bodes terribly for the league.
Let’s hope that PED use doesn’t tarnish the NFL the way it did for the MLB and Track & Field. I suspect more suspensions will be underway, as the NFL proposed new testing in May for human growth hormone (HGH). As for Holmes, this may be the dagger in the heart for his NFL career, since he was already fighting for a spot on the Raiders roster.
