With Michael Crabtree sidelined until at least November with a torn Achilles tendon, tight end Vernon Davis is prepared to fill in for Crabtree anyway he can.
Davis most likely will become Colin Kaepernick’s top target for the 49ers. Davis is looking to have a big season, and according to ESPN.com, Davis expect to make his presence known, even while lined up at wide receiver.
I’m willing to step up and do whatever they ask me to do,” Davis said Sunday. “They’ve been having me line up at wide receiver, pretty much all over the place. It’s a good thing that I get the opportunity to work with those guys because it not only helps me at the wide receiver position, it also helps me at the tight end position. My feet get quicker, my route-running is better.”
At 6-foot-3 and 245 pounds, Davis doesn’t think he’s to big to make plays at wide receiver.
“I mean, it’s just like tight end,” he said. “You’re just running routes.”
