Charlie Strong and Urban Meyer made a great duo during their time in Florida. The combination of Meyer’s spread option offense and Strong’s always dominant defenses propelled them to a couple National Championships. Now both are in charge of top ranked programs and Charlie Strong would like to see them face off on the field:
“We talk a lot,” Strong said of his old Gators boss. “I have asked him to play me. I don’t know if he will. I don’t know if he wants to. But I’d love to.”
There has been a lot of talk about Louisville’s soft schedule and they know that could come back to haunt them:
“Before we got in the ACC, I was like, ‘We need to play a big-time opponent … Urban, why don’t you play us?'” Strong said. “He said, ‘Let’s think about that.”
If I am Charlie Strong, I wouldn’t hold my breath on Urban trying to schedule them. Louisville is a program on the rise and you don’t often see the “big boys” reaching out to schedule them. Just ask Boise State how much harder it got to schedule once they started beating the Oklahoma’s of the world. The other aspect to keep in mind here is recruiting. Ohio State wouldn’t be likely to give Louisville any additional shine to their in-state recruits.
This is a nice idea and college football fans love these cross conference matchups but don’t get your hopes up.
