It isn’t like Kyrie has a lot of flexibility at this time or in the future. He can sign a 5-year $80 extension next summer or he can play out his rookie deal and become a restricted free agent.
Because he would be a RFA, the Cavs could match any offer, meaning Kyrie isn’t going anywhere. He might as well sign the extension and then become an unrestricted free agent when it is up. By then, he will have a better idea if the Cavs are a championship contenders or not.
For what it is worth he doesn’t want to talk about it at all now.
“I’m not really worried about that right now. Right now I’m focusing on the year ahead, my third year, then I’ll worry about that in the summertime,” Irving said. “Right now I’m a Cavalier. This is where I am. All that future stuff, I’m not really worried about.”
The Cavs have surrounded Kyrie with some good talent, but he needs to stay healthy. It is time for the Cavs to make that next step into the playoff picture.
