MLB, welcome to the 21st century.
The fans have begged and pleaded–managers have argued and been tossed from games, and finally MLB is ready to answer the call and introduce a much updated replay system.
The system is similar to the one utilized by the NFL with a challenge system in place. Managers from both teams will be awarded two challenge each for the first six innings, then one challenge after the seventh.Calls will be reviewed by a crew in MLB headquaters in New York City, who will make the final ruling.
Umpires are collectively said to be in favor of the change, and a 75 percent vote by the owners is needed for approval, and the players’ association and umpires would have to agree to any changes to the current system.
Braves president and member of the replay committee John Schuerholz said 89 percent of the calls would be reviewable–there’s been no word on if that will include balls and strikes.
Commissioner Bud Selig called the ‘revolutionary’ move “historic” despite the fact it still has to be put to vote. All signs prove positive though, and change seems to be coming to baseball.
It’s about time.
