Cris Collinsworth probably woke up Monday morning confused as to why he was under siege for comments he made in regards to NFL players with character issues no longer have those problems once they are engulfed in the Patriot Way.

“All Bill Belichick does is brings them in here and there hasn’t been one ounce of a problem,” Collinsworth said. “There’s something about when they come in and play for Patriots, whatever their issues may have been before, they disappear. They play great football for them and Aqib Talib is at the top of that list.”

Collinsworth for his part was talking specifically about Aquib Talib, but once he started his sentence off with “There’s something about when they come in and play for Patriots,” all gloves were off from the media.

Collinsworth chose to ignore the fact that Aaron Hernandez is currently being accused of murder, thus opening the analyst up for scrutiny.

During an appearance on “Amani and Eytan” on NBC Sports Radio Tuesday, Collinsworth did his best to explain what he was saying.

“I took a little heat in the game for saying (Bill Belichick) has a way of making issues go away,” he said. “A guy like (Patriots cornerback) Alfonzo Dennard still had an issue. (Bellichick) is not a cure-all. He’s not a magician out there. But they do seem to not have problems to the same extent playing for him.

“Some of it’s fear. Some of those guys, one more mistake and their career is going to be over. Nobody works that better than Belichick does. When you first come to that team, even if you’re a seven-year veteran, you don’t talk to the media. Some of those guys are more afraid of doing a press interview than they are of black cats and ghosts. They know if they screw up they’re gonna catch hell from Belichick.”

Collinsworth gaffe the minute he tried to paint Belichick and the Patriots as a gold standard organization that takes problem child athletes with character issues and turns them into Reggie White like figures once they’ve bought in.

Alfonzo Dennard is a problem child and he would have been cut had he not been able to cover a little bit.  Brandon Spikes has had character issues.

Hernandez would still be a Patriot if his charge was for anything other than murder.
