The Brooklyn Nets started their first day of training camp on the Duke University Campus yesterday. Reports out of Durham are that newbie head coach Jason Kidd took a back-seat approach to practice, letting Lawrence Frank run the majority of it from a coaching standpoint. But on the players end, to no one’s surprise, Kevin Garnett stepped up as the vocal on-court leader.

“He is the heart and soul of our team,” declared Jason Terry. And this was just after Garnett’s first formal practice with the Nets.
Garnett emphasized that the Nets will be a defense-first team and even set the ambitious goal of keeping opponents to under 80 points per game.
Lofty or not, I like that KG is setting the bar high. That’s exactly what a team like this needs to live up to heightened expectations. I’m looking forward to seeing how this team plays, but even more interested to see how Kidd will coach them.
