There are things you want to hear you coach say when you are going into free agency and there are things you don’t. You can easily count this is something you don’t want to hear because it could mess up your negotiations. Per the New York Daily News, Coughlin acknowledged Nicks’ inconsistent play:
“You’ve got to get to the point where the reliability factor is there as strongly as it always has been,” Coughlin said, per Ralph Vacchiano of the NY Daily News. “Has it been there up to this point? No. But we’re saying ‘Let’s get back to work and get this done.’ We count on this guy.”
This is an interesting situation. The Giants organization is correct that Nicks has been inconsistent and is always banged up. However, are all the Giants issues on him this season? Not a chance but since he is going to be looking for a big deal at the end of the year the focus will stay on him in a subtle way to negotiate.
