Qualifying for the World Cup is a very exciting moment for a country. There is generally a lot of celebrating since it’s a big deal when you country makes it. Algeria’s celebrations took a turn for the worst though as 12 people died and 240 were injured in celebration after the 1-0 victory over Burkina Faso sent Algeria to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

From the AP:

A government statement Wednesday said that five celebrating fans were killed when a van slid off the road into a ravine in the mountain town of Bejaia, east of Algiers, while four others died in the southern city of Biskra in a car accident.

The remaining three died in other towns, the statement added without further details.

I know it’s an exciting time but I hope that future celebrations don’t turn tragic.
