Falcons GM Says Mike Smith’s Job Is Safe

The Falcons are 2-7 and for most franchises that would mean talk of firing or replacing the head coach.   Not so fast in Atlanta though.

Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff brushed off rumors of Jon Gruden or any other candidate replacing his current head coach.

“Mike Smith is a hell of a football coach; he’s the leader of this team,” Dimitroff told ESPN.com. “Mike’s going nowhere.”

Smith has a 58-31 record since taking over the Falcons and he’s led the team to the playoffs five times.  The Falcons season has been ruined, but that’s more about injuries and attrition, than a poor coaching performance.

“Any time there’s insinuation toward an organization that we believe in, it’s agitating, sure,” he said.
