Living in the United States, we get to enjoy freedom and opportunities that so many citizens of some other countries may not have. Marlins starting pitcher Jose Fernandez definitely doesn’t take any of these for granted. The 2013 NL Rookie of the Year and 3rd place finisher in Cy Young voting defected from his home country Cuba when he was merely 15 years old with his mother, but unfortunately his grandmother was left behind.

This was a big deal for Fernandez, since he always mentioned that his grandmother was his #1 fan in baseball. Fernandez honors her by having her name alongside his mother’s in a tattoo on his left bicep. CBS Sports is now reporting that the holidays are now probably going to be his most memorable, since the Marlins organization found a way to get Fernandez’s grandmother to the US.  The surprise reunion is awesome, and you can’t help but shedding a tear for the young pitcher and his beloved abuela.
