I’m not sure Rex Ryan has any choice but to continue to start Geno Smith.
After previous poor performances by Geno Smith, Rex Ryan was always quick to point out that the rookie was his quarterback and no real discussion on the matter was needed.
This time Rex won’t guarantee after Smith’s dreadful performance against the Baltimore Ravens.
“I’m not going to talk about any individual,” Ryan told the New York Daily News after New York’s 19-3 loss against Baltimore. “Starter, backup, whatever. I want to watch the tape.”
There’s nothing really on tape that Rex needs to watch. Geno Smith was abysmal, completing 9-of-22 passes for 127 yards, no touchdowns, and two interceptions.
His passer rating was 40.9, which is a slight improvement of last week’s total of 34.8. Smith has thrown eight touchdowns and 18 interceptions this season.
Smith excepted blame for the loss, and I’m not sure he had much choice.
“I’ll take it upon myself to be the first one to say that I didn’t play that well,” Smith told the New York Daily News. “And I’ve got to pick it up. And I’ve got to find a way to spark the offense, somehow, some way.”
Rex Ryan and more importantly, John Idzik have hitched their wagon to Geno Smith. They should let him play this out at this point.
