When you are 35-2 as a starter in college, it would appear fair for people to bring your name up in the discussion of all-time greats. That’s exactly what Sports Illustrated is doing with it’s latest cover featuring Alabama QB AJ McCarron. “King Crimson” is what they call the Bama star who is currently trying to lead his team to three straight national championships:

McCarron might be almost as well known for his arm candy as his arm strength, his body ink as his body of work. But let’s be clear: He’s not just one of the great Alabama quarterbacks. AJ McCarron is on the short list of the most successful players in the history of college football. Even if not many think of him that way. …

“Then again, if you want to build a case for McCarron, you could do worse than starting here: He has as many national championships as he does defeats.”

Nevermind that I believe QB wins and winning percentage is completely overrated considering you could get average QB play yet be on a loaded team with great coaching to win games. It’s not a crazy thought at all to think that AJ isn’t even the best QB in his division since he and Johnny Manziel are in the SEC West.

I have a feeling that the debate about McCarron’s place in history will only get more intense as they zero in on yet another national championship.
