It seems to be a foregone conclusion that Kevin Love will be departing from the Minnesota Timberwolves after his current contract expires after the 2015 NBA season. Given the team’s struggles to surround Love with adequate talent, many just assume Love will want to take his talents elsewhere. Elsewhere, preferably being a much larger market than Minnesota.
And that’s where Los Angeles comes in. Love played his college basketball at UCLA and hasn’t made it a secret that he would be interested in playing for the Lakers someday. One anonymous GM told ESPN’s Chris Broussard that Love to the Lakers as a free agent in 2015 is “a 100 percent certainty.”
While I personally don’t think predicting anything that far into the future is a certainty, it appears that Love will be taking his talents elsewhere after his current deal runs out. What I think will be more interesting to watch is what the Timberwolves decide to do.
If it becomes clear that Love is gone, it would make the most sense to trade Love to get something for him before he just walks for free. Assuming he is traded, could another team perhaps convince Love to re-sign with them and not be just a rental until his free agency? That’s one of the ways Love to Lakers could be thrown off track.
