I guess if the guy giving you  a glowing recommendation is one of the best coaches walking the planet, you can’t really get mad if the team interested in you gauges the interest of the guy giving the recommendation.

According to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, when the Lions first reached out to Tony Dungy to ask him questions about Jim Caldwell, Lions brass first asked Dungy if he’d be interested in taking the job.

“He said, ‘I got to start this off, are you interested at all?’” Dungy said. “And I said, ‘No, Martin, I’m not.’ And then we went on. We were able to talk about what we needed to talk about.”

Dungy of course then went on to give Caldwell a glowing recommendation to the Lions.
