Jadeveon Clowney was a guest on Jim Rome Wednesday and the topic of pay for play came up.

Clowney of course was the topic of much debate last season because of the notion that returning to South Carolina could possibly cost him money.

The consensus No. 1 player in the draft told Rome that “college players should be paid,” and that he “would’ve stay at South Carolina if players were paid.”

Yes. Having to take care of my family, it would have made a difference if I’d have gotten paid,” Clowney told Jim Rome. “If I would have had the chance to take care of my family through college I would have probably stayed in college.”

Unsurprisingly, Clowney also believes that college athletes should be paid and told Rome as much.

“I think so,” Clowney said. “They are selling our jerseys with our numbers and making money off of ticket sales so I think college athletes should get paid.”

Oh? Does he know what the student loan debt in this country is? Something he doesn’t have to worry about. Plus he gets a stipend, books are paid for and I am sure the professors allowed him to breeze through his classes. AND, the College gives him the opportunity to show his talent and go on to be one of the 6 percent of earners in this country. Please, he IS getting paid, and the selling of his jersey is off-setting the cost of his tuition, room and board and books especially to a university he probably wouldn’t have gotten into in the first place. If he had to take care of his family, maybe he shouldn’t have gone to college and somebody else would have had the opportunity. The level of entitlement and just pure ungratefulness these COLLEGE football players have is disgraceful.

I one hundred percent disagree with Observer. College sports is a multi billion dollar business. The universities, Disney (ESPN), advertisers, everybody gets paid except the student athletes. No other large group of people in the United States are being exploited like college athletes. All players unite!

  3. jimmyt says:

Right, like hundreds of thousands of dollers in scholorships to attend great universities that most kids can only dream about is not enough. Observer is right on.
