Jameis Winston may have won a national title this season, but now the FSU star QB is vying for another championship. This time Winston wants to win it in baseball. Winston made 32 starts and 17 relief appearances in 2013 for Seminoles baseball and will rejoin the team. Baseball America has also named him to the All-American third team according to NESN.
Seminoles baseball coach Mike Martin isn’t allowing himself to get caught up with Winston’s celebrity status, however. Martin has made it known that Winston will receive no special treatment.
“We will use Jameis just like we do everybody else,” coach Mike Martin said last month, per ESPN. “We’re not going to treat him any differently, and he doesn’t want to be treated any differently.”
Martin also plans to place Winston in similar roles as he played last season for the Seminoles, playing outfield, DH and eventually being the team’s primary closer on the mound.
“He’s a Seminole baseball player now. We’re going to use him in the outfield, we’re going to use him on the mound, we’re going to use him as a DH some,” ” Martin said. ”But we want him to be our closer when it’s all said and done. That’s what we’re going to prepare him to be.”
Last season Winston hit .235 in 32 starts. 22 of the starts were outfield and the other 10 were at DH. He also finished with a pitching record of 1-2 with an ERA of 3.00, 21 strikeouts and 2 saves in 27 innings.
