Jonathan Vilma Afraid Gay Teammate Would Stare at His Naked Body

by Greg Smith | Posted on Thursday, February 6th, 2014

bso vilma case dismissed

Andrea Kremer sat down with NFL players recently to discuss a wide range of locker room topics in the NFL. One hot topic currently is whether or not the NFL is ready for an active, openly gay player. Jonathan Vilma had this to say about his comfort level:

“I think that he would not be accepted as much as we think he would be accepted,” Vilma added. “I don’t want people to just naturally assume, like, ‘Oh, we’re all homophobic.’ That’s really not the case. Imagine if he’s the guy next to me and, you know, I get dressed, naked, taking a shower, the whole nine, and it just so happens he looks at me. How am I supposed to respond?”

This isn’t the first time Vilma has been in hot water over homophobic related comments. He is entitled to his opinion and all that, but it is this type of thinking that keeps active gay players from coming out.

I don’t think what he said here is all that homophobic, really, it sounds more like a normal opinion on how a straight male would feel undressing, showering or any other close contact with someone they know is homosexual.

Isn’t this the reason gyms don’t have co ed shower rooms? How is a gay guy showering in a room full of straight men any different than a man showering in a room full of naked women? I’m sick of every comment that isn’t 100% pro gay being criticized as homophobic by the media.

  3. Lionsam says:

I agree with Vilma 100%. Homophobia is not the issue as much as it is very discomforting to know that, in your mind’s eye, a team mate may appear to be looking at you with a different mindset to a straight guy and who wants that? A locker room is a sacred place and every player should be free to express himself, whether it is to be naked or to speak openly. Anything that affects that freedom should never be tolerated. The world at large wants to publicly support homosexuality as a means of political correctness and a fear of being marginalized but are these their thoughts and opinions privately? Call a spade a spade. Be gay if you want, its your prerogative but dont force your lifestyle and ideologies on others. That is where the wrong lies.

But its ok for you to force your lifestyle and ideologies on others? Pretty sure they’re not gonna break out in an orgy because of showering. Not to long ago African Americans wouldn’t have been able to shower with whites. Singling out a person because they’re different is what the kkk does. You say be gay its your prerogative, just not in your locker room?

      • Yardman says:

Why are you comparing the race issue with homosexuality? Homosexuality is a choice, being black or white is not…That’s mixing apples and oranges. Blacks not being able to shower with whites or drinking from the same water fountain was an awful time in our country when ignorant people didn’t know any better. To compare a person’s pigmentation to someone’s lifestyle is also ignorant.

        How long ago???

Please don’t flatter yourself young man. Can you honestly say that you’ve never looked at another man (unknowingly straight or gay)and thought nice clothes etc. For all you know your nephew – if you have one could be gay and afraid to tell you. We are all special people, and that includes my “gay” son.

  5. FeroxInimicus says:

Vilma has given his opinion, like the others above me. I also agree with him. Its not a about homophobia, its about feeling comfortable where you stand. The same is being tackle not only in sports but in the military. Vilma didn’t state that being homosexual is wrong, just the plain facts that anyone will feel akward, man or woman. Greg Smith I’m very disappoint that you will take his quote out of context and portray it in any shape or form as anti-gay.

  6. chris porter says:

What a dummy, he has already been in the shower with a gay guy, he just did know it. A certain percentage of the population has always been gay, for this idiot to think that he hasn’t showered with a gay guy is laughable. Someone he played with in high school, college, or the pros has been gay.

  7. Yardman says:

Jonathan Vilma, like all of us had an opinion. His OPINION is just that, an OPINION. Then why for the life of me are we making a big deal over someone else’s opinion. Having said that, here’s my opinion….I THINK HOMOSEXUALS ARE CONFUSED INDIVIDUALS ABOUT THEIR SEXUALITY. IF THE GOOD LORD WANTED YOU TO BE THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT YOU ARE, HE WOULD HAVE MADE YOU THAT WAY…I DON’T CARE IF THE LIBERAL MEDIA WANTS TO LABEL ME AS A HOMOPHOBIC, I WAS NEVER ONE TO BE POLICALLY CORRECT ANYWAY! LABELS DON’T MEAN SQUAT TO ME. Moreover, please explain to me how can two homosexuals procreate and leave a legacy when we are all gone….Folks, we need to wake up and face facts….Homosexuality in all its forms is a detriment to any society. I don’t hate homosexuals, I do hate homosexuality and I REFUSE TO ACCEPT THAT LIFESTYLE….Is that being homophobic, then so be it!

    • Engineer says:

      Yardman, THANK YOU!! Well said!!

    • chris porter says:

Your entire statement illustrates your ignorance of the subject. The bottom line is that no one chooses their sexuality, you are attracted to who you like naturally. Please enlighten us on when you made the choice to be heterosexual. The same things you said were said about interracial marriage years ago, just goes to show you that bigotry and hatred lives on.

  8. Cecilia M. Conley says:

It’s really no big deal. They have been there all the time, just ‘in the closet’. Once you understand that they have been seeing you all the time, you get over it. I am not a lesbian but have had associates who were. I treated them just like a guy I wasn’t interested in and they left me alone. More than I could say for the guys. But, deal with it. If he touches you in the shower just punch him.

  9. Zach says:

Yardman for president! You said what many of us are scared too due to the liberal media labeling us homophobs. I am not scared of the lost individuals. Its the act!
