Their are going to be some pretty good matchups in boxing during the next few months. Even more exciting is the prospectus for even bigger matchup depending on who gets by who in the next few weeks.
Canelo Alvarez will face Alfredo Angulo on Saturday as he returns to the ring for the first time since his loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr.
if Canelo beats Alfredo Angulo on Saturday night, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Shaefer says they’ll try to make a fight with the winner of the June bout between Miguel Cotto and Sergio Martinez.
“I think if Canelo beats Angulo, then we could be talking about a possible fight against Miguel Cotto or Sergio Martinez. We can not rule out Martinez [winning the fight], but if Cotto wins we will try to make that fight, a great pay-per-view between two of the best junior middleweights. We have to wait and see what happens,” Schaefer said.
Cotto (38-4, 31 KO) and Martinez (51-2-2, 38 KO) meet on June 7 on HBO pay-per-view, but Cotto is one of only true free agents in boxing, and if he wins, is free to continue to bounce back-and-forth between networks, and between working with Top Rank and Golden Boy.
Sergio Martinez is promoted by DiBella Entertainment, and has one more fight left on his deal with HBO so a bout with Canelo wouldn’t be likely until after 2015.
