The Detroit Tigers took a rather interesting approach after Max Scherzer decided to reject their contract extension offer and opt for Free Agency next season–they announced it on twitter.

Scherzer is the reigning AL Cy Young winner, so it’s a bit bizarre for the Tigers to announce this news so freely. Had Scherzer agreed to the contract he would’ve been one of the highest paid pitchers in the game, but the two broke off talks. Tigers issued this statement via their twitter page:

Scherzer is still under contract this season, and the Tigers said there will be no in-season talks between the two sides. Bizarre situation all around but will make for a great ‘arms race’ for his services down the road.
