NFL hopeful, linebacker Michael Sam has been the epitome of how to handle a difficult situation, in the public light, and while preparing for what could be the most important day of his life.
He’s written a very appreciative letter to his fellow Missouri family, and I do believe it’s worth a read in full. He asked that it be published while him and his teammates were participating in the Missouri pro day.
The letter highlights the better part of the collegiate experience. So often, stories reported about college athletics are negative in nature, but this one reminds us of the bonds forged between young people at a very critical time in their lives. Sam makes it clear throughout the letter that Mizzou was a comfortable place for him to be himself:
“You gave me a chance to live my truth without judgment, without hesitation and with great discretion and respect. I have a long journey ahead of me, a lot of hard work and many dreams I want to fulfill. But I do it with the confidence that my Mizzou family will be there for me every step of the way.”
These students are to be applauded. Although in 2014 it shouldn’t be a big deal who a grown adult chooses to spend their time with, it continues to be. The students at Missouri, on a national stage, demonstrated the meanings of acceptance, fairness, and maybe most importantly; respect.
