Cam Newton is in line for a huge contract extension, but he may have to wait another year for it.
Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman said the team will use the fifth-year club option to keep Newton under contract through at least 2015.

Newton became the first No. 1 pick under the new collective bargaining agreement, and agreed to a slotted four-year contract worth a guaranteed $22 million in 2011.
Under the new CBA, teams now control the fifth year for first-round picks at a controlled price. For the top 10 picks, the fifth-year salary is the average of the top 10 players at their position.
