It’s never good to publicly celebrate someone else’s failure, but you won’t be able to tell that to students on Wake Forest’s campus.
USA Today reports that Wake Forest head basketball coach Jeff Bzdelik resigned yesterday, after going 51-76 in four seasons. Even more disappointing was the Deacon’s 2-32 conference road record during that span.
For his sake, I hope he was far away from Winston-Salem when the student body got hold of the news.
Reminiscent of a huge tournament victory (which has eluded WF for quite some time now), toilet paper flew across quad areas in celebration as students made it known how they felt about Bzdelik leaving. When athletic director Ron Wellman was informed of the “rolling” going on around campus; he had this to say:
“We have passionate students.”
The students disapproval of the job Bzdelik has done thus far is no surprise. Just earlier this month, fans purchased an ad in the school’s newspaper, the Old Gold & Black, reminding readers of his record, winning percentage, and even a link to the accompanying website.
Cold world.
