Tyler Summitt, the son of coaching legend Pat Summitt has just been named the new head coach of the Louisiana Tech women’s basketball team at the age of 23 according to Yahoo Sports.
“I’ve always felt I’ve had a leg up because I grew up around basketball,” Summitt told Yahoo Sports in a 2012 interview. “When you grow up a coach’s kid, there’s something unique about it and I don’t think it’s just with coaching. I think it’s leadership as a whole because you see the impact on the players. You’re in the staff meetings seeing what the staff is doing, but you also see the effects. You get both sides.”
Chrisstasia Walker, a 5-foot-8 junior guard on Louisiana Tech’s women’s basketball team is less than 13 months younger than her new coach. Summit who graduated from Tennessee in 2012, spent the last two years at Marquette as an assistant.
As the youngest head coach in division 1 basketball one has to wonder if it was his skills or his last name that got him this job. I’m sure other contenders believe it’s the latter. Pat Summitt took over the Tennessee program at the age of 22 transforming them into a national powerhouse. Only time will tell if her son will do the same.
