I see what Bill O’Reilly was trying to do there.
Kentucky head basketball coach John Calipari has been making the media rounds recently to promote his book, “Players First: Coaching From the Inside Out.” Coach Cal made an appearance on Fox News’ The Bill O’Reilly Show. O’Reilly did his best to stay on the ultimate topic of basketball before he decided to ask Calipari “how he’s able to manage and coach kids who listen to rap music?”
“The culture has coarsened… I don’t know whether you listen to this rap stuff or the hip-hop stuff.”
“Has that changed their attitude? How do you impose discipline on kids who are pretty much gonna do what they’re gonna do?”
“How do you keep them away from temptation with the hustlers everywhere?”
Calipari did his best to steer clear of any controversy on the topic and did a good job of simply answering the question as best he could. Calipari was there to promote his book, while O’Reilly simply wanted to know how the best coach in college basketball is able to manage the teams full of black players on a yearly basis.
I believe had someone else asked the question or based it differently, it probably wouldn’t have come across so negatively. Say what you want about the question, but Calipari has done an amazing job over the years of dealing with kids from this quote-on-quote hip-hop generation.
