Jeff Van Gundy is known for making outlandish statements, so this comes as no surprise.
The Houston Rockets rank second in points per game at 107.6, but they’re in the bottom ten in giving up points. They give up 103.1 points a game.
Despite their defensive woes, Van Gundy believes James Harden and Dwight Howard will bring Houston their first championship in nearly 20 years.
“I’m going to pick the Western Conference winner and I’m sticking with Houston,” Van Gundy said Thursday afternoon on the eve of ESPN’s playoff coverage. “That would mean that [the Rockets] would have to win three straight series on the road after [first-round opponent] Portland, which seems really difficult. I believe the Western Conference team will win it but you could also convince me about San Antonio, Oklahoma City and the [Los Angeles] Clippers as well. They are all really good.”
Houston is missing a legitimate third piece to be considered real threats to win it all. Van Gundy’s Houston ties could be playing a little role in this prediction.
