I appreciate an athlete who gives back and this time its Steelers WR Darrius Heyward-Bey who stepped up to the plate.
From Yahoo! Heyward-Bey has paid for his HS, McDonogh School in Maryland, to install stadium lights for its football field.
“I had the opportunity when I was 14 to go to school there, and it was the best thing to ever happen to me,” Heyward-Bey tells the Good News blog.
He spoke about how his school couldn’t play on Friday nights because of lack of lighting; they were forced to play on Saturdays.
“I remember I said, ‘One day, I wanna bring lights here,'” he recalls. “It’s crazy how almost 10 years after, I’m able to give that gift. I came from a single mother household and I like to give back. I’m all about education and the school system,” he says.
The school will begin installing the lights this summer and will be able to play under them Sept 5. I enjoy seeing athletes step outside of their stereotypes and do the unexpected. Giving back to his HS, is a gift that will continue to give because for generations they will be able to enjoy the stadium.
