College World Series Day 1 Recap
UC Irvine Anteaters vs Texas Longhorns
In front of a crowd of 23,796 that was leaning towards the Longhorns, UC Irvine and Texas engaged in a pitcher’s dual that most people expected coming in. The Longhorns drew first blood in the second inning with a bunt single by Zane Gurwitz that didn’t quite look like it was supposed to be more than a sacrifice. Unfortunately for the team from Austin, they were blanked the rest of the way as Andrew Morales was great throwing 6 innings and only giving up the one earned run. After that, Evan Brock and Evan Manarino nailed the door shut on the Longhorns. National Coach of the Year, Eaters Head Coach Mike Gillespie spoke in the post game presser about having no reservations about using both Evan’s in todays game since they had an off day if they won or lost. In the end, a big 8th inning rally sealed the deal for UCI. SS Chris Rabago gave them the lead for good with his RBI single in the 8th. The Longhorns left 12 runners on base though so they had their chances throughout the game. Even in defeat, Texas coach Augie Garrido felt good about their chances moving forward since he has a resilient bunch. After the 3-1 win, UCI will play Vanderbilt on Monday.
Louisville Cardinals vs Vanderbilt Commadores
We will always think of this game as the rain that never came. Forecasters predicted that the game might not even get played but luckily Mother Nature must have been a baseball fan for the night. In this ballpark, it’s a common joke that getting up by 2 runs might as well be 7 or 8 and that certainly felt like it would hold true when Swanson smacked a 2-RBI double for Vandy that gave them a 3-0 lead. Vanderbilt closed the deal by getting 2 and 1/3 shutout innings from reliever Adam Ravenelle. The Cardinals havent had the best recent history in the CWS and are trying to avoid another 2 games and out situation like last year. After winning the 3 hour and 40 minutes long contest, the Dores will play UC Irvine on Monday in the winners bracket and Louisville will face off against Texas.Powered by Sidelines
