In a feat that has amazed many around the world, Olympian Alysia Montano competed in the opening rounds of the 800 meter race at the US Track and Field Championships.
Montano, who finished in an impressive 2 minutes and 32 seconds, got clearance from her doctors and said the preparation process was just business as usual.
“I’ve been running throughout my pregnancy and I felt really, really good during the whole process,” Montano said after the qualifying heat.
“That took away any fear of what the outside world might think about a woman running during her pregnancy,” Montano said. “What I found out mostly was that exercising during pregnancy is actually much better for the mom and the baby. … I did all the things I normally do … I just happened to be pregnant. This is my normal this year.”
The 5-time 800 meter National Champion says she felt good during the race and although she finished last in her heat she’d won in the eyes of everyone who watched as they gave her a standing ovation as she crossed the finish line.
