Usually if you’re lucky enough to live until over 100 years of age, the average person is taking it easy; relaxing around loved ones and living out their golden age in a quiet, eventless, comfortable atmosphere.
But don’t expect 105-year-old Agnes McKee to conform to the expectations. In honor of her 105th birthday, and being one of the eldest residents of San Diego County; Ms. McKee has been chosen to throw out the first pitch of the San Diego Padres/New York Mets game on July 20th; becoming the oldest person to do so.
“I am very honored to do this, it’s exciting and I hope I can get through it,” said McKee, who weighs around 90 pounds and stands just shy of 5 feet. “I was really glad I got up this morning, I was afraid I wouldn’t.
For the last several months, McKee has been working up to this moment; attempting to memorize some of the player’s names as well as working on her underhand pitch.
“When this happened I tried to learn some of the names of the ball players in case somebody asks me that,” said McKee. “My husband played baseball and we went to many games when we lived in Cleveland.”
At such a tender age, it can be difficult to focus on the here-and-now, however McKee credits her achievement on her outlook on life.
“My main thing is to enjoy everyday as it comes along, don’t worry about things that haven’t happened yet,” said McKee.
It’s beautiful to see this woman enjoying her latter years and staying active. We should all try to use her perspective on life now so it will pay dividends later.
