MMA analyst Ariel Helwani just broke the news on Fox Sports 1’s UFC Tonight that Featherweight champion Jose Aldo was injured and will pull out of UFC 176.
UFC 176 is scheduled for August 2nd in Los Angeles and now there is a huge void at the top of that card. On a weekend that features a stacked UFC 175 card UFC President Dana White must be kicking himself for leaving the promotion with little options for UFC 176.
Here are the few matches that could substitute as the UFC 176 main event next month:
- Daniel Cormier vs Anthony Johnson – Cormier is coming off an easy win against Dan Henderson and could take on the young & refocused Anthony Johnson.
- Holly Holm vs Meisha Tate – Talks have said that Holly Holm is close to signing her deal with the UFC. Well now is the time for Dana to close the deal and throw her into a fight against the well known ‘Cupcake’ Tate.
- ‘Big Foot’ Silva vs Alistair Overeem 2 – Silva almost took Overeem’s head off in their last fight and a rematch would gain a lot of traction. It may be a weak PPV option but the UFC doesn’t have many choices.
I look forward to seeing who the UFC chooses to fill the UFC 176 slot. We will keep you updated as more details emerge.
