For the past five years or so, Golden Boy Promotions has handled the promotional side of all the Floyd Mayweather fights on a fight by fight basis. This was mainly because Mayweather is very close to Richard Schaefer who was the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions.
Schaefer resigned from that position because of a power struggle with Oscar De La Hoya. Mayweather isn’t a fan of De La Hoya, so he immediately stated he would stop doing business with Golden Boy, one small problem in that whole equation.
Mayweather’s own promotional company, Mayweather Promotions doesn’t have a license to promote fights and considering he has a fight coming up in two months that is a problem. The problem though could be solved shortly because Mayweather Promotions is in the final stages of getting their boxing license, but there is an interesting development.
They aren’t applying for a license in Nevada where Mayweather has fought exclusive over the last seven years, but New York.
What does that mean exactly?
What it could mean is that Mayweather’s next fight on September 13th could be self promoted by his company at the Barclay’s Center. Barclay’s has been trying to get a Mayweather fight for several years and are offering a huge amount of money to make that happen.
Official announcements have to be made soon, so be on the lookout.
