In the simplest way possible let me explain to you what is going on with Maidana’s gloves. A day before their first fight, Mayweather and his team protested to Maidana wearing Everlast MX gloves. Maidana has worn the gloves for most of his career and the gloves were approved by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
A few hours before the fight, Maidana was paid a large sum of money to use different gloves. After the fight, Maidana and Mayweather argued back and forth over the gloves.
Both arguments were pretty weak to be honest. Mayweather shouldn’t have waited until the last minute to bring it up after they had been approved and Maidana can’t complain after basically taking a bribe to wear some other gloves. You take the bribe, you have to live with the results.
The rematch is coming up and Maidana is still complaining, but this time there is no debate, because it was put in the actual contract that Maidana can’t wear the gloves. He isn’t happy about it, but at least he has a full training camp to work with the new gloves. You want to know what Floyd thinks about this? Here is what he had to say via Boxing Scene.
“In the sport of boxing it’s all about protecting both parties. Life after boxing, I care about my life after boxing. Its about being on an even playing field. Some fighters in the past, some fighters have died in the ring from gloves that wasn’t padded. The only thing I want to do is be on an even playing field,” Mayweather said at the ESPYS.
“You have to ask Marcos Maidana that question [regarding why his gloves are so special to him]. It’s obvious he’s been getting a lot of knockouts by fighting with gloves with no padding, which I don’t feel is safe for me or for him. Both fighters should be safe and be protected, even though it’s a brutal sport. This is not a bareknuckle brawl, this is not MMA. This is about professional boxing at it’s highest, so it’s about being on an even playing field.”
Once again, pretty weak reasoning, not because he wants an equal playing field, but because the gloves used by Maidana aren’t special, they are used by many fighters, including fighters under Mayweather Promotions.
Does Mayweather only care about his health and not the health of the opponents his fighters are facing?
When you are the A-side of an PPV, you can basically do whatever you want. Just be honest, you think Maidana hits harder with his prefer gloves, so you paying him extra to wear something else.
It is as simple as that.
