San Diego State Trying to Trademark “I Believe That We Will Win”

This year during the World Cup, USA fans were all about the chants. This happens every year but the “I Believe That We Will Win” chants really seemed to catch fire this year.

Now, San Diego State is trying to capitalize on the movement. They are attempting to trademark the phrase:

A quick search through the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s online database backs that up. On Oct. 27, 2011, Aztec Shops Ltd. (a clothing store in the SDSU student union) filed a trademark for “I Believe That We Will Win!” on any caps, hats, jackets, bottoms, shirts, T-shirts, sweatshirts and other tops that don the words.

It’s published for opposition July 22, meaning if no one challenges it within 30 days, the rights on goods and services belong to SDSU. Want to make a shirt that reads “I Believe That We Will Win!”? Get ready to pay up (though dropping the exclamation point would probably be enough to get by).

You will probably here this chant once or twice at college football games this season.

It’s only right that SDSU be able to cash in on this right? Let’s just hope that they don’t go full Texas A&M when vigorously defending the trademark against everything and anybody including cancer surviving double amputees.

Here is a video of SDSU doing the chant at their basketball experience. Thanks to San Diego Sports Domination for passing it along:
