The West Virginia University’s football team isn’t starting July 2014 in a good way. Standout Wendell Lynn Smallwood, has been arrested for witness intimidation in a murder trial. Smallwood allegedly tried to get a witness to recant their statements in a murder trial where his friend was the accused according to to Cpl Mark Ivey.
The murder occurred in 2012 in Wilmington. DE. Smallwood has been arrested as an out-of-state fugitive and is being held for extradition. Police say that Smallwood tried contacting the witness several times in 2013 to get them to make false statements to the police regarding the incident but would not say how they were able to identify Smallwood was indeed the person contacting the witness.
Smallwood was to start his sophomore season at WVU and may have even secured a starting spot. He was also the team’s leading kickoff returner. As of now, he remains in custody and awaits to be extradited to Delaware. Police aren’t sure when this will happen, however.
