As you can imagine this isn’t going over too well. Lana (played by American actress C.J. Perry) is the Russian manager of WWE wrestler Rusev. The gimmick is fairly simple and one the WWE has used for years, they are anti-USA.
But at Battleground PPV they went a little bit overboard with it, by referencing a real life tragedy into the sports entertainment world of wrestling.
Nothing funny about what happened to flight MH17 and that shouldn’t have been used.
Lana is taking most of the heat, but remember most of the promos are scripted by WWE writers beforehand, so she was just doing as instructed.
It is just shocking that someone didn’t think this was a bad idea.
UPDATE….
WWE Releases a statement saying people just misunderstood.
A rep for the WWE tells TMZ the segment was not about the Malaysia Airlines crash in specific. The rep pointed out, “The storyline with characters Rusev and Lana has been a part of WWE programming for more than 3 months. WWE apologizes to anyone who misunderstood last night’s segment and was offended.”
