The breakup between 50 Cent and Floyd Mayweather started when Floyd was in jail. 50 Cent had a masterplan on how to make the Money Team go worldwide. To do that though he wanted Mayweather to get away from Al Haymon, Leonard Ellerbe and others on his team. 50 Cent sent a Suge Knight style contract to Floyd while he was in jail (you can read the whole thing here) laying out his plan.
This didn’t sit well with Floyd and in the end Floyd chose Haymon over 50. From that point on the shots both subtle and direct have come fast and furious. The latest being the allegation from 50 that Floyd can’t read.
50 spoke with XXL (transcribed by Boxing Scene) about the situation and tried to explain his side of the story about how he is trying to help Floyd, not hurt him.
“Floyd is one-dimensional,” he said, via Edward Chaykovsky of BoxingScene.com. “The Money Team concept is one-dimensional. We actually started pushing it during the recession. It was cool because his viewership was going up but it’s not actually the right message for me and who I am.
“So I started working with the United Nations and The World Food Program and Feeding America. Providing meals through the SK Energy Shots and that was at the same time because I started realizing that this is not the right concept of what you should present to the public.”
“I don’t hate him. I love him, actually,” he said. “Entering the sport of boxing is a reflection of that relationship. He doesn’t make any money away from the sport of boxing. That tells you when he’s done fighting, he’s done period. I just try to encourage him to do things away from the sport…
“It’s pretty tough to digest the concept that we don’t spend money the same. He spends all of his money. He lives a richer lifestyle than we actually live day to day. In the end, it’s not a sustainable lifestyle. I’ll have to help him when it gets too tough. We’ve had conversations about this.”
Like most things there is some truth to this, but also some things that are being left out (like 50 trying to take over The Money Team). If 50 really does care about Floyd’s well being and future, he might want to stop trolling him every single day. That is a weird type of love.
I hope Mayweather has a plan after his career is over, because you can’t fight forever and those $70 million a year checks will be stopping shortly.
