I can understand why Kevin Mitchell would deny this story because it takes some true crazy to harm a small, household animal. However, former teammate, Darryl Strawberry says he will confirm the once considered urban legend about his former teammate Kevin Mitchell decapitating his girlfriend’s cat to be true.
The story was first told in 1999 in a book that another teammate, Doc Gooden, wrote. Gooden described the scene as an argument between Mitchell and his girlfriend that led to the demise of the cat by beheading. Mitchell claims that Gooden made the story up, but now Strawberry confirmed in an interview that the story was definitely true.
“That’s a pretty good story. I think that’s pretty accurate,” Strawberry told host Marc Lamont Hill. “Kevin Mitchell did do that. Kevin Mitchell, he’s a different type of guy. Great guy. Super teammate. Great person — (but) he was from San Diego and he was affiliated with gangs quite a bit, and I guess he figured his girlfriend was acting a little crazy so he thought, ‘I’ll kill her cat.’ ”
