‘GGG’ Will Fight Slugger Marco Antonio Rubio in Cali

Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin has had a difficult time finding top notch opponents to fight as of late because of the middleweight champion’s incredible knockout power. Marco Antonio Rubio must not have received the memo.

Marco Antonio Rubio will take on ‘GGG’ on October 18th in Carson, California. The StubHub Center in Carson has recently earned the moniker of the ‘SlugHub’ Center due to the brawls that seems to be synonymous with the venue. Rubio (59-6-1, 51 KOs) has the record that suggest this main event will be a toe-to-toe slugfest along the lines fans in Carson come to expect.

“It will be a tremendous fight,” Oswaldo Kuchle of Promociones Del Pueblo, which handles Rubio, stated in a Tuesday press release sent out by Golovkin’s K2 Promotions. “I can assure you that Rubio will make this a war.”

HBO knows that ‘GGG’ needs to be their next star and if he can’t attract the big names in the division he can definitely  put on great matches against sluggers. The veteran Rubio seems up to the challenge.

“I’m excited to fight another world champion,” Rubio, last in action for a 10th-round stoppage of Domenico Spada in April, stated in the press release. “I always accept the biggest challenges, and without a doubt, this will be the greatest of my career. I will show Golovkin a real Mexican Style fight on Oct. 18.”

The fight that a Mexican fighter will headline the event is another attraction for HBO and Top Rank. Golovkin doesn’t have a built in fan base in the US because he’s from overseas, so the next best thing is to pair him against Mexican fighters in California because the fans will show great support for the challengers.

“I’m very excited to fight in California,” Golovkin stated in the press release. “I always enjoy attending fights at the StubHub Center and look forward to a Mexican Style fight against Marco Antonio Rubio.”

‘GGG’ prides himself on staying active but soon these small fights need to turn into huge headliners if Top Rank hopes to cash in on their investment.

  1. The top fighters are scared to fight Gennady Golovkin. I want to see GGG fight either Mayweather, Pacquaio or Bernard Hopkins. I know it will never happen.
