J-E-T-S JETS! JETS! JETS!
You’ve probably heard the chant before during Jets games, and those who have followed the team over the years certainly remember Fireman Ed Anzalone, the Jets super-fan who would lead the crowd in cheering his team on. A few seasons back, Ed stepped down from being the unofficial biggest Jet fan at every game after fans began to turn on him for wearing a Mark Sanchez jersey. Seriously, that’s how much Jets fans hated Mark Sanchez.
Turns out the Jets miss having him in the stands and getting their crowd going, so they tried to woo the fireman back with a free lunch according to Deadspin.
This past April, Anzalone said the Jets reached out to him about making a comeback. This led to an April meeting with a member of Jets management.
“Originally, they called me to see if I would come back to what I had done. They took me out to lunch to see if I had any interest in coming back,” Anzalone told Yahoo Sports. “I said no because it was the same problem, I couldn’t take my kids to the game. I told them I wouldn’t come back.
Can’t blame the team for trying I guess.
The article goes on to say that the Jets are now holding a contest to find their next superfan after being rejected by Anzalone. Try all they want, it’s highly unlikely the team finds a fan who connected with the crowd as well as Fireman Ed did. Don’t complain about it either Jets fans, you have only yourselves (or Mark Sanchez) to blame for this.
