In a bizarre incident, Seattle Marinars Jesus Montero was cited for throwing an ice cream sandwich at Mariners scout, Butch Baccala. Montero was playing in a minor league game after coming off an injury, and Baccala was reportedly heckling the catcher by yelling “Rapido, rapido” as Montero walked off the field in between innings. Early reports say that Montero ignored Baccala, but then Baccala sent an ice cream sandwich to Montero to continue the heckling. That’s when Montero lost his temper and hurled the sandwich at Baccala.
Baccala is now denying most of the story. In fact, he said he never heckled Montero and he adamantly denies sending an ice cream sandwich to him via Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times. Baccala also mentioned to check to see if the stadium where the game was played even sells ice cream sandwiches.
“It’s not what is being portrayed,” Baccala told Baker. “Of course I wasn’t [trying to instigate Montero]. Why would I? I work for the Mariners. I’ve worked my [expletive] off for the Mariners. Why would I do anything to hurt anybody? That wasn’t even close to the intention.”
Montero will not play anymore for the rest of the season according to the Mariners. This certainly is a strange story.
