Matthew Macklin was scheduled to return to the ring later this month but now his fight will be postponed because of the bizarre shooting of his trainer, Jamie Moore.
The Manchester Evening News were the first to report the shooting:
Former champion boxer Jamie Moore was shot outside a Marbella mansion owned by the son of a suspected Irish crime boss.
Moore, 35, from Salford, was hit in the legs and hip after being shot five times as he left the property of Daniel Kinahan. The Costa Del Sol home of Daniel’s father, Christy, was raided in 2010 as part of an operation involving Spanish police and the then Serious Organised Crime Agency. He and his sons were all arrested.
It is believed Moore was the innocent victim of a bid to issue a warning to people he knows. There is no suggestion he is involved in any criminal activity.
Moore, the former European light-middle-weight champion from Walkden, has been training Birmingham fighter Matthew Macklin, who owns the MGM gym in Marbella.
It will be interesting to hear more details about what exactly led to the shooting of Moore. We wish Moore a full and speedy recovery.
Macklin expects to fight later this fall after and will most likely fight the same opponent.
