This is the definition of a classy move. Robert Griffin III gave two young fans the surprise of a lifetime when he took off his cleats after walking up to them and had them sign them. It was assumed that he would give them the cleats but instead he wanted to do something different and special:
“They don’t expect me to ask them for their autographs,” he said. “It was more like, ‘OK, cool.’ Down the line hopefully they remember that and say I was their first autograph.”
“When I was growing up I always wanted to meet guys I looked up to, role models,” he said. “If I’d have met Michael Jordan and he asked for my autograph there would have been a shock. It’s flipping the script a little bit, but I think it means something to them. If I’m their first autograph that’s an honor to me.”
RG3 went on to say that he heard someone say “he’s going to give them his cleats!” so he will also be sending cleats to Evan Washo and Vincent Silver Jr. in their favorite colors. I am sure that brightened their days to have a guy like him ask for their autographs.
