After spending 12 seasons with the Carolina Panthers, Steve Smith Sr. was cut back in March. Smith had some very hard feelings about the way he was let go by the organization and warned that if he ever got a chance to play against them everybody better wear goggles because there would be “blood and guts” everywhere. Smith will get his chance to make good on his threat this upcoming Sunday when his new squad the Baltimore Ravens face off with the Panthers at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.
In reference to Smith’s comments, former teammate and Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams addressed the media wearing goggles Thursday. When asked about the goggles, Williams said:
“I just happened to have a pair around,” Williams said with a laugh. “I’ve used them in the past, but it wasn’t for blood and guts. It was to keep mud out of my eyes when I’m on my ATV. But they’re good for multiple occasions.”
When asked about facing Smith for the first time Williams said:
“[Steve] kind of left us a message the first game of the season, so I’m looking forward to it,” Williams said of facing Smith.
The message Williams speaks of came in Baltimore’s Week 1 match up against Cincinnati after Smith caught an 80-yard touchdown.
“Hey, if you f—— think I can’t play, you’re going to find out in Week 4. M—–f——!”
Week 4 just so happens to be this week’s game against the Panthers. Clearly Smith is still harboring bitter feelings for his former team. This game will be very interesting to say the least.
